On the Sunday after Hyat's birthday we had a birthday party with family and friends. We are so blessed to be surrounded by wonderful friends that love and cherish our kids. We had a dinosaur theme complete with a dinosaur rice crispy treat cake! Thanks to all who were able to join us we missed those of you that were too far away!
First the cake! I had asked Karley to help me make a dinosaur cake for Hyat's birthday. So on Saturday afternoon she came over with an armful of ingredients and began work on Hyat's rice crispy treat dino cake. To giant batches of treats, green food coloring and a couple hours later she had the parts made and the cake mostly assemebled. We then put it in the deep freeze until the next day. Prior to Hyat's party she came back completed the final assembly and took pictures before anything could go wrong. As it warmed it up it slowly began to sag and finally the head drooped and the dino had a bit of lean, but heck it was time to eat it anyway! I made lunchbox cupcakes topped with handpainted dinos!
Hyat was excited to blow out his candle (he had practiced at his school party)! He blew it out quickly and we even relit it so he could blow it out again! After blowing out his candle, Hyat asked for a fork to eat his cupcake - no diving in face first for this little boy!

Finally, we got a pinata for the kiddos. We let Hyat take first whack at it and he did a fine job! We let all the girls take turns too - it was amazing how much more eager Hyat was to whack a dinosaur with a stick than the girls were... It must be a boy thing. Thanks to our friend Brett for being willing to potentially sacrifice various body parts to be the holder of the pinata. we were lucky and no kids got whacked in the process. The pinata was made of cardboard and impossible for the kids to break, so I eventually had the honor of whacking it hard enough to knock the goodies out! Here is the action (please note he is wearing his size 8 cowboy boots)!
After all the fun, Hyat crashed (came down off his sugar high) for a big nap. After all of the birthday excitement (party at school, us singing happy birthday all weekend and his party on Sunday) Hyat would periodically begin singing Happy Birthday to himself which was often followed with, "Do it mommy/daddy - happy birthday." Meaning he wanted us to sing Happy Birthday and he would sing along. Pretty cute!
