The next day we got up and on our way to the Gulf for some saltwater fishing and to explore Texas. We were headed to Port Aransas which is down near Corpus Christi. We made the drive down there then you have to ride these fairy boats (in your car) to get onto the island. We headed over on a Sunday and because it was the end of "spring break" there were few people heading onto the island and a ton of people heading out.
Our first adventure was to go fishing on the Island Queen (a.k.a. The Party Boat). My dad discovered this on one of his trips and decided to go because "coolers of beer were welcome." So we rolled into town ate a quick lunch and jumped on board. Two years ago when we were here we also took the "Party Boat" and caught an abundance of fish (Sheepshead). We also had a little excitement when Cindy got stung by a Hardhead (saltwater catfish). Then to top it all off Buck caught a Black Drum (a pretty ugly thing) which was the biggest fish of the day. The problem was he hadn't entered the big fish pool. Bummer. So our expectations were high! As we got on the boat Hyat did some toddling around and exploring before it got to bumpy when we were on our way out. I made Buck put in his $5 for the big fish pool. That was the mistake! We didn't catch anything the whole time we were out on the boat. Actually very few people caught anything. But, alas, we still had a good time and enjoyed the sunshine and seeing all of the huge ships and tug boats and drilling rigs.... It is a very different scene from Montana. Hyat missed his napped so he slept for a bit in the backpack, but I think he was pretty curious about all the new sites that it wasn't for long!
After the Party Boat we headed to our hotel. We had found this place The Tarpon Inn. When were here last. It is this really cool old hotel. It was built in 1886 and they have retained a lot of the character. I don't have any really good pictures of it so check it out at: http://www.thetarponinn.com/ You have to look at the rooms because they have a ton of character. Buck and I had room 26, and we had rooms 24 and 32 - I think. Anyway, they are all great! They also have this great porch that was nice for hanging out on and a swimming pool. Since we were coming from snow in Montana, I know Hyat and I loved the pool in the afternoons so we could cool off before dinner!
